Terrain types and effects

Areas and Theaters

The mapboard is frequently divided into Areas or Theaters. This is used in scenarios for VP collection or for some specific movement prohibitions (e.g. neutral territories or friendly but not open regions, etc…), or also to help cards or events gameplay. Last but not least it is quite useful for the game AI.

As presented above, the board is divided into theaters, themselves composed of areas, which are groups of regions. Different region types can appear on a mapboard.

NB: the values indicated below may change during beta. Valid values are in tooltips.

Each terrain costs an expense in Movement Points (MP) to enter it. Cost is always 1 MP for all air units, whatever the terrain or the region (including over sea regions). Terrain types may provide bonus or penalties to combat units in battle.

SGS Winter War

Clear

Cost 1 to enter. Stacking limited to 40.
Pursuit and breakthrough allowed to most small Finnish units
(lower than Brigade size) and all ski troops.
Forage value of 20 (used when unsupplied).

Deep Forest

Cost 3 to enter. Stacking limited to 8.
Land attacker has a combat penalty of -2.
Defender has +1 combat and +1 morale bonus.
Air have a bombardment penalty of -2.
No armor superiority bonus.
Supply, pursuit or breakthrough forbidden. Forage value of 5.

Marshes

Cost 2 to enter. Stacking limited to 6 (in the north), 8 (almost everywhere) or 12 (Karelian isthmus, more developed).
Land attacker has a combat penalty of -1.
Defender has +1 combat and +1 morale bonus.
Air have a bombardment penalty of -1.
No armor superiority bonus.
Pursuit and breakthrough allowed to most small Finnish units
(lower than Brigade size) and all ski troops.
Forage value of 5.

Forest

Cost 2 to enter. Stacking limited to 12, except in the south where it is 18 (Karelian isthmus, more developed).
Land attacker has a combat penalty of -1.
Air have a bombardment penalty of -2.
No armor superiority bonus.
Pursuit and breakthrough allowed to most small Finnish units
(lower than Brigade size) and all ski troops.
Forage value of 4.

Forested Lakes

Cost 3 to enter. Stacking limited to 10 (far north), 16 (most of central Finland) or 18 (Karelian isthmus, more developed).
Land attacker has a combat penalty of -1.
Defender has +1 combat and +1 morale bonus.
Air have a bombardment penalty of -2.
No armor superiority bonus.
Pursuit and breakthrough allowed to most small Finnish units
(lower than Brigade size) and all ski troops.
Forage value of 7.

Lake

Only allowed to air units, to fly over (cost 1 MP).

 

Rough

Cost 3 to enter. Stacking limited to 10.
Land attacker has a penalty of -1.
Defender has +1 combat bonus.
Air have a bombardment penalty of -1.
No armor superiority bonus.
Pursuit or breakthrough forbidden. Forage value of 3.

Sea

Only allowed to air and naval units.
Air units fly over allowed at 1 MP cost.

 

Urban

Cost 1 to enter. Stacking limited to 30.
Land attacker has a combat penalty of -1.
Defender has +2 combat and +1 morale bonus.
Air have a bombardment penalty of -2.
No armor superiority bonus.
Pursuit or breakthrough forbidden. Forage value of 12.

SGS Afrika Korps

Clear and Clear with transportation

Cost 2 to enter (1 if trail present). Stacking limited to 14.
Pursuit and breakthrough allowed, but supply can only go through
those with trails/roads. Forage value of 1 (used when unsupplied).

Cultivated and Clear with transportation

Cost 2 to enter (1 if trail present). Stacking limited to 18.
Pursuit and breakthrough allowed, but supply can only go through
those with trails/roads. Forage value of 10 (used when unsupplied).

Delta and Delta with transportation

Cost 3 to enter (1 if trail present). Stacking limited to 12.
Land attacker has a combat penalty of -1.
Defender has +1 combat bonus , Air have a bombardment penalty of -1.
No armor superiority bonus, pursuit or breakthrough forbidden.
Forage value of 8.

Mountain

Cost 3 to enter. Stacking limited to 8.
Land attacker has a penalty of -1. Air have a bombardment penalty of -1.
Defender has +1 combat and morale bonus.
No armor superiority bonus, pursuit or breakthrough forbidden.
Forage value of 3.

Oasis

Cost 2 to enter. Stacking limited to 12.
No penalties or bonus in combat
Supply can go through normally
Forage value of 3.

Rough and Rough with transportation

Cost 3 to enter (2 if trail present). Stacking limited to 10.
Land attacker has a penalty of -1.
Defender has +1 combat bonus. Air have a bombardment penalty of -1.
No armor superiority bonus, pursuit or breakthrough forbidden.
Supply can only go through those with trails/roads. Forage value of 3.

Desolate Hills and Desolate Hills with transportation

Cost 3 to enter (2 if trail present). Stacking limited to 6.
Land attacker has a penalty of -1. Defender has +1 combat bonus.
Air have a bombardment penalty of -1.
No armor superiority bonus, pursuit or breakthrough forbidden
Supply can only go through those with trails/roads Forage value of 3.

Salt Marsh and Salt Marsh with transportation

Cost 3 to enter (2 if trail present). Stacking limited to 6 (8 if trails present).
Land attacker has pursuit (if any) penalty of -1.
Defender has +1 morale bonus.
Supply can only go through those with trails/roads Forage value of 0.

Shifting Sands and Shifting Sands with transportation

Cost 3 to enter (2 if trail present). Stacking limited to 6 (8 if trails present).
Defender has +1 morale bonus.
No armor superiority bonus, pursuit or breakthrough forbidden
Supply can only go through those with trails/roads Forage value of 0.

Sands and Sands with transportation

Cost 3 to enter (2 if trail present). Stacking limited to 6.
Land attacker has pursuit (if any) penalty of -2.
Air have a bombardment penalty of -1. Defender has +1 morale bonus.
Supply can only go through those with trails/roads Forage value of 0.

Wet Marshes

Cost 3 to enter (2 if trail present). Stacking limited to 8.
Land attacker has combat penalty of -1.
Air have a bombardment penalty of -2.
Defender has +1 combat and morale bonus.
No armor superiority bonus, pursuit or breakthrough forbidden.
No supply can go through. Forage value of 6

Urban

Cost 1 to enter. Stacking limited to 14.
Land attacker has a combat penalty of -1.
Defender has +1 combat and +1 morale bonus.
Air have a bombardment penalty of -2.
No armor superiority bonus, Pursuit or breakthrough forbidden.
Forage value of 14.

Lakes and Lagoons

Only allowed to air units, to fly over (cost 1 MP).

 

Sea

Only allowed to air and naval units.
Air units fly over allowed at 1 MP cost.

 

The Nile

Only allowed to air and naval units.
Air units fly over allowed at 1 MP cost.

 

The Suez Canal

Only allowed to air and naval units.
Air units fly over allowed at 1 MP cost.

 

Steppes and Steppes with transportation

Cost 2 to enter (1 if trail present). Stacking limited to 14.
Pursuit and breakthrough allowed, but supply can only go through those with trails/roads. Forage value of 2 (used when unsupplied).

Clear

Cost 1 to enter. Stacking limited to 24.
Forage value of 12 (used when unsupplied).

Prairie

Cost 1 to enter. Stacking limited to 24.
Forage value of 6.

Steppes

Cost 1 to enter. Stacking limited to 24.
Forage value of 6.

River

Sea and riverine movement only. Cost 1 to enter.

 

Desert and Desert with trail

Cost 1 to enter. Stacking limited to 16.
Supply can only go through. Forage value of 0 (2 with Trails).

 

 

 

Forest

Cost 1 to enter. Stacking limited to 24.
No cavalry superiority bonus, pursuit or breakthrough forbidden.
Forage value of 10.

Deep Forest

Cost 2 to enter. Stacking limited to 12.
Land attacker has a penalty of -1. No cavalry superiority bonus,
pursuit or breakthrough forbidden. Forage value of 2.

Hills

Cost 2 to enter. Stacking limited to 16.
Land attacker has a penalty of -1. No cavalry superiority bonus,
pursuit or breakthrough forbidden. Forage value of 12.

Island

Cost 2 to enter. Stacking limited to 8.
Land attacker has a penalty of -1. Pursuit or breakthrough forbidden.
Forage value of 6.

Jungle

Cost 4 to enter. Stacking limited to 8.
Land attacker has a penalty of -1. Defender has +1 combat bonus.
No cavalry superiority bonus, pursuit or breakthrough forbidden.
Forage value of 6.

Marsh

Cost 2 to enter. Stacking limited to 12.
Land attacker has a penalty of -1.
Defender has +1 combat and morale bonus.
No cavalry superiority bonus, pursuit or breakthrough forbidden.
Forage value of 6.

Mountain

Cost 2 to enter. Stacking limited to 12.
Land attacker has a penalty of -1. Defender has +1 combat and morale bonus. No cavalry superiority bonus, pursuit or breakthrough forbidden.

Coastal Waters

Sea movement only. Cost 1 to enter.

 

High Seas
